The Witch, réalisé par Robert Eggers, est plus qu'un simple thriller d'horreur. C'est un drame familial sur fond de croyance religieuse mêlant des thèmes complexes tels que l'adolescence, la condition de la femme, la culpabilité , la superstition.
Le film évoque donc des problèmes contemporains et qui ont toujours été d'actualité. La religion par exemple, avec la croyance en un dieu protecteur ou pas; des créatures du diable qui nous veulent du mal etc. La condition de la femme aussi est évoquée. En effet à cette époque, si la femme sortait du rang, s'affranchissait de sa famille et de ses obligations, elle était considérée comme une sorcière.
Le film se sert de ces thèmes pour nous emprisonner psychologiquement. On se sent isolés, en proie au doute, effrayés, choqués.
L'histoire se déroule en 1630 en Nouvelle-Angleterre. Un couple pieu, banni de sa communauté, s'installe à l'orée d'une forêt, au milieu d'une étendue sauvage, avec leurs cinq enfants. La mystérieuse disparition de leur nouveau-né et la perte soudaine de leurs récoltes vont rapidement les amener à se dresser les uns contre les autres; se confrontant également à une force maléfique hantant la forêt.
L'époque (1630), choisie avec soin, se situe un peu avant la chasse aux sorcières de Salem. Epoque où l'on était très pieu, et où l'on avait très peur de ce que l'on ne connaissait pas (vous me direz, c'est toujours le cas), pensant que cela devait être l'oeuvre du diable.
Le lieu est également en ligne avec l'atmosphère du film (une forêt mystérieuse, qui me fait un peu penser à Brocéliande).
L'esthétique est belle, belle profondeur de champ, l'éclairage est naturel, tout comme cette famille innocente qui s'installe. Les plans larges sur la maison, la lisière de la forêt, avec cette brume, ce temps grisâtre, ces couleurs dé-saturées; accentuent notre sentiment d'isolement dans cette histoire.
Cette famille est vraiment seule et n'a pratiquement rien, si ce n'est la foi et leur amour les uns pour les autres... ce qu'ils vont finir par perdre de toute façon au fur et à mesure.
Le jeu des acteurs est à souhait. Les jumeaux sont hystériques et insupportables, le petit frère est attachant, la mère est à fond dans sa croyance, tellement qu'on penserait qu'elle est folle; le père très pieu également, tente tant bien que mal de garder la tête froide.
Le jeune fille effectue la majorité des tâches ménagères; elle s'occupe de ses frères et sœurs, et devient souvent le bouc émissaire de tout ce qui se passe de mal, et subit les accusations des siens. Ses parents la voient comme un fardeau et hésitent même à la vendre.
C'est une belle performance d'Anya Taylor Joy, qui joue ici un personnage plein de complexité.
Ce n'est pas un film d'action, pour sur. Personnellement j'y ai trouvé quelques lenteurs par moment, mais d'un autre côté ces lenteurs ajoutent à l'ambiance pesante de l'histoire. Comme si la menace était toujours au dessus de la tête des personnages, sans qu'on sache pour autant quand elle tombera.
Je vous avoue que je suis sortie du film, les yeux écarquillés, ne sachant pas trop quoi en penser. Les premiers mots qui me sont venus à l'esprit n'ont pas été "C'était super" ou "c'était trop nul"; mais plutôt "C'était étrange". Je suis ressortie de la salle complètement ensorcelée, essayant de comprendre si j'avais aimé ou pas.
Avec du recul je dirai que c'est un bon film, si vous recherchez du mystère, et un peu de frisson.
Et puis... n'avez-vous pas envie de savoir ce qu'il y a dans cette maudite forêt?

The Witch, directed by Robert Eggers, is more than a simple horror thriller. It is a family drama, with a religious belief background; mixing complex topics, such as religion, the women status, guilt, superstition.
The movie evokes contemporary issues which have always been topical. Religion, for example, with the belief of a protective god or not; evil creatures who want to hurt us etc. The woman status is also mentioned. Indeed, at that time, if a woman came out of the rank, freed of her family and her obligations, she would be considered as a witch.
The movie uses these themes to imprison us psychologically. You feel isolated, beset by doubt, scared, and shocked.
The story takes place in 1630 in New England. A pile couple, banished from its community, move to the edge of a forest, in the middle of wildness, with their five children. The mysterious vanishing of their newborn and the loss of their crops will quickly get them to stand up against each other, and they will be confronting an evil force haunting the forest.
The year (1630) has been well chosen. It takes place just before the witches hunt of Salem. Era when we were very stake, and when we were very afraid of what we didn't know (you would tell me it is still the case!), thinking that it must be some kind of devil's work.
The place is also in line with the atmosphere of the movie (a mysterious forest, which reminds us Broceliande).
The aesthetic is beautiful, there is a beautiful depth of field, lighting is natural, as this innocent family. The wide shots of the house, the forest edge, with this fog, this grey weather, this de-saturated colours; it completely emphasizes our feeling of isolation in this story. This family is truly alone and has nearly nothing but faith and their love for each other... which they will end up loosing anyway as the story will go.
The actors are good. The twins are hysterical and unbearable, the little brother is endearing, the mother is thoroughly in her belief, so you would think she is crazy, he father tries somehow to keep a cool head. The girl does the majority of the housework, she takes care of her siblings, and often becomes the scapegoat for everything that goes wrong, and suffers the accusations of her family. Her parents see her as a burden and even hesitate to sell her.
It is a beautiful performance of Anya Taylor Joy, who plays a character full of complexity.
It is not an action movie, for sure. Personally, I found it a bit slow sometimes, but on the other hand, it adds something to the heavy atmosphere of the story. As if the threat was always above the characters' heads, without knowing when it will fall onto them.
I confess that after the movie I was like, wide eyed opened, not knowing what to think about it. The first words that came to my mind were not "It was great" or "It was bad"; but more something like "It was strange". I was completely bewitched, trying to understand if I liked it or not.
In hindsight I would say it is a good movie if you are looking for some mystery and a little shiver.
And after all... don't you wanna know what's in that bloody forest?
